Sweeney Plant and Vehicle Hire started out in 1973 working as a contractor, carrying out street works mainly for British Telecom and mostly involving hand digging. The first item of plant, a second hand JCB, was acquired in 1975 and used for the contracting work, although occasionally hired out.
Throughout the next few years work was also taken on from British Steel, Ravenscraig helping to develop and establish the business. By 1980 there were 12 items of plant capable of being hired. In 1983 Sweeney Plant introduced the hire of Self Drive vehicles, with the contractor side gradually diminishing until it ceased in about 1990. As the years passed and the business grew Sweeney Plant kept adding to its hire fleet and diversifying into new market areas, in 1984 the company moved premises to Petersburn Road, Airdrie. In 1987 Sweeney Plant started hiring out general plant i.e. dumpers, mixers, rollers etc. this was successful for a number of years until a downturn in the the market place and an increase in the competition forced Sweeney Plant to diversify and focus on other areas.
